A Noun, A Verb, And "I Won The Heisman Trophy!!"
Why Herschel Walker shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the US Senate
There are SO many reasons Herschel Walker is thoroughly unfit to be elected to the US Senate that it’s difficult to know where to begin. That he’s a chronic, shameless liar who will say almost anything to win the election should be damning enough. Despite that, though, polls in Georgia still seem to be pretty close. Keep in mind that these are some of the same people who sent Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) to Congress. So it would appear their standards are not terribly high or particularly rigorous (Does he have a pulse? Is he a Republican? OK, then.)
Not even his senior staff knows what will spew from his pie hole. Once Walker does say something, they have no idea whether or not it’s true. So he’s reduced his staff to assuming that anything he says is a lie until they’ve been able to fact-check it and (hopefully) prove its veracity.
There’s also the reality that so much of what Herschel Walker says is borderline incoherent. He can begin making a point and then a sentence or two into his monologue, his brain jumps the tracks, and his argument becomes impossible to follow. He’s speaking English (we think), but his thought process becomes unrecognizable to lucid humanoids.
I can’t even imagine what a disaster a debate with incumbent Rev. Raphael Warnock would be. Warnock, who IS quite eloquent, would undoubtedly make Walker look as if he took too many hits to the head.
Even though Walker has said he’ll debate Rev. Warnock, it isn’t easy to imagine a circumstance under which he’d submit himself to that. The upside for him is so minimal and the downside so perilous that he’ll almost certainly continue lying and making excuses until it’s too late for debates to matter.
On the one hand, I can’t believe that Herschel Walker is the best the Georgia GOP could do to run against Rev. Warnock. I’m not necessarily saying that Walker is stupid, but listening to him for any length of time leaves one with the distinct impression that he couldn’t spell “cat” if you spotted him the “c” and the “t.”
Walker has been endorsed by the GOP’s orange bell cow, Donald Trump, which is all many Republicans need to hear- “If he’s good enough for Donald Trump….” That said, Trump’s stamp of approval may not be the breath of life it used to be, especially as the House January 6th Committee continues to show that his involvement in the insurrection was hip-deep. Plus, Trump’s “a noun, a verb, and ‘I won the election’” schtick has long since grown old and tired. Only the blind and dumb insist that Joe Biden stole the election. Sadly, too many blind and dumb Republicans are running for office in November.
Even worse for Walker are the emerging reports of his less-than-stable past. I’m hardly one to make light of anyone’s struggle with mental illness, but Herschel Walker has had some “issues,” if you know what I mean. His problems raise legitimate questions about his emotional stability and fitness to serve in the Senate. Not that Congress is the exclusive home of the mentally stable (see Boebert, Lauren and Taylor Greene, Marjorie), but Herschel Walker would take things to a new and possibly dangerous level.
It’s been said (often by me) that voters get precisely the quality of leadership they deserve. I hope Georgia voters realize they deserve much more than a man whose claim to fame is that he won the Heisman Trophy 40 years ago. He also won a national championship at the University of Georgia and was a star running back in the NFL, but all of that was a long time ago. Even though he played for my Minnesota Vikings, NOTHING from his stellar football career qualifies him to be a US Senator in any shape, manner, or form.
So, Georgia, PLEASE don’t dumb down Congress more than has already been done. We’ve already been subjected to the Tinfoil Hat Brigade in the House raving about guns, Christian Nationalism, and banning abortion, birth control, and gay sex. We need elected representatives who are rational and reasonable, not those who should be on a court-ordered Thorazine drip.
The choice between Rev. Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker should be easy. Rev. Warnock is the incumbent- an honest, capable, and erudite man of God. And he still preaches at MLK’s church in Atlanta. Herschel Walker is dishonest, poorly informed, and sounds as if he’s taken too many blows to the head. He’s still trying to figure out how many secret children he has.
Georgia, how much more do you need to see or hear to make up your mind?
Not a word. Not one word can I understand. And I’m not sure I want to.
"he’s reduced his staff to assuming that anything he says is a lie until they’ve been able to fact-check it and (hopefully) prove its veracity." -- Maybe he should hire people proficient in creative writing to just fill in the gaps?
