'Merica!! F**k, yeah!!!
God created government, and the fact that we have let it go into the possession of others, it’s heartbreaking. That’s why He is calling and equipping people to step back into these mountains right now.
Tom Parker, Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice
Stupidity is the regurgitated meal that feeds itself and on which it grows fat.
Stewart Stafford
I can’t speak to the validity of one’s tightly-held religious beliefs, but I do know stupid and poorly considered when I stumble across it, and Chief Justice Parker is every bit of both.
Why would I say that with such marked confidence? Because with one stupid, ill-considered, and self-righteous hyper-Christian ruling, Parker’s Alabama Supreme Court has thrown fertility medicine in the Yellowhammer State and nationwide into an almost unimaginable state of panic and confusion.
Chief Justice Parker and his fellow Christofascist mullahs couldn’t have created more confusion and consternation if they’d set out with that express purpose. It’s almost as if, with one 7-2 decision, the Court was trying to drag Alabama back to the 16th century. Granted, that’s not the challenge it might seem, but defining an embryo, a literal clump of cells, as a child is one of the most patently ridiculous and yet unsurprising things to emerge from an über-Conservative Christian mindset.
And embryon can no more survive outside the womb than I can perform neurosurgery. If I’m the last thing you see hovering over you before being put under before your lobotomy, you’re in YUUUGE trouble, Comrade.
But, when you believe women are property and their reproductive functions are the property of the state, defining embryos as children probably makes perfect sense.
witness just this week, when the Alabama Supreme Court — led by Chief Justice Tom Parker — ruled that a microscopic cluster of frozen cells is legally a child.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Supreme Court has ruled that frozen embryos can be considered children under state law, a ruling critics said could have sweeping implications for fertility treatments.
“Unborn children are ‘children’ … without exception based on developmental stage, physical location, or any other ancillary characteristics.”
that’s right, the self-styled Party of Small Government is now shoving its meddling fingers into medical facilities — and as a result, IVF centers all over Alabama are shutting down.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham health system has paused in vitro fertilization procedures following an Alabama Supreme Court decision due to fear of criminal prosecution and lawsuits, a spokeswoman said.
so now women who want to be pregnant — but can’t conceive the good old-fashioned way — are out of luck in Alabama. ace job, Alabama Supreme Court, pat yourselves on the back.
And, when Chief Justice Parker is talking about “mountains,” he’s not talking about the kind you’ll need a sherpa and climbing equipment for. No, he’s talking about Seven Mountains Dominionism, the type of Christofascism that people like House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) want to force upon all Americans.
It has little, if anything, to do with the teachings of Jesus Christ and EVERYTHING to do with establishing permanent political control over the country. Or, in layman’s terms, it’s what one might call a “theocracy” and not a kind and gentle one.
Holy Mike Johnson, our brand-new failed Speaker of the House, isn’t just your average religious whacko — he’s far more dangerous than that.
Mike’s a member of the most extreme of the extreme: a sect known as the Seven Mountains Dominionists.
The seven mountain (7-M) mandate or the seven mountain prophecy is a strategy for evangelizing the modern world and enlarging Christ’s kingdom. It has especially gained a following in Charismatic and Pentecostal churches. Those who follow the seven mountain mandate believe that the best way for the church to be effective is to bring change in the seven major spheres of influence in society.
let’s put that into plain english: Dominionists believe that God has ordained them to run everything — given them dominion over all, to use their language — and when I say everything, I mean every thing. here are their “seven mountains”:
1) Education
2) Religion
3) Family
4) Business
5) Government/Military
6) Arts/Entertainment
7) Media
So, if you look at the Alabama Supreme Court’s decision in this light, it takes on a much different- and far more sinister- tenor. Chief Justice Parker is aiding and abetting the transition of government into the Seven Mountains sphere of control.
The separation of Church and State means nothing to him. He sees his role as being accountable to a power “higher” than the laws of man, thus the liberal sprinkling of Scripture throughout the Court’s decision.
This fits nicely with Project 2025, which is intended to help Donald Trump and his minions trash democracy if he wins the election in November. Should that happen, come January 20, 2025, there are plans in place to remake the federal bureaucracy and judiciary in a way that will focus far more power in the office of the President.
Long story short, Donald Trump will become a virtual dictator, the Department of Justice (DOJ) will become weaponized against his enemies and adversaries, and Evangelicals will be allied with him. Finally, they will achieve their dreams of solidifying control over all aspects of American life.
their scheme is to purge the entire government rank and file and replace them with Trump loyalists. that’s right, everybody — from the highest levels of the federal government all the way down to your local dogcatcher. and they’re not waiting until 2025 — they’ve already started recruiting foot-soldiers.
school boards, election offices, the whole shebang — everywhere you turn, there will be a MAGA lackey ready to rig the system.
once everything is in place, we’ll stop having stupid little things like elections, or freedom, or democracy.
read the whole thing. it will scare the living fuck out of you.
Yes. Yes, it will…and if it doesn’t, you’re probably part of the problem. This should not be happening in America, yet there’s a good chance it might.
In light of that possibility, I find myself asking what impact Project 2025 might eventually have on people like me and our ability to keep expressing ourselves. Will I still be able to keep speaking my mind in this forum? Will freedoms like freedom of speech and expression be curtailed? Will freedom of the press take a hit in a Trump Administration?
What happened in Alabama last week can be viewed as an isolated case of Right-wing wingnut fuckery…or it might also be seen as the opening salvo in what may become an ideological/theological/political war within American society.
As tired as this comparison might seem, it’s the most accurate one I can think of: Will we see America begin to transform into something along the lines of the Republic of Gilead from Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale?
To do this, of course, Christofascists will think nothing of engaging in some good, old-fashioned voter suppression, like what Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin did in the run-up to the state’s General Assembly elections. His staff purged 3400 qualified voters (none of them Republicans, I suspect) from the state’s voter rolls.
Salon magazine refers to this as “weaponized incompetence,” which might be an overly kind way to describe outright cheating at best or potentially criminal behavior at worst.
Oops…a mistake…a computer glitch. What a terrible, awful, horrible thing to happen…and just before an election, too.
Yeah, who coulda foreseen that. Nice voter roll you have here…be a shame if anything were to happen to it….
the thing is, Donald Trump doesn’t give a flying fuck about any of this shit.
Little Donny Fuckface’s ideology is this: Donald Trump should have all the money, all the power, and all the attention, all the time.
he doesn’t care how this happens.
if Trump could become King for Life by espousing the virtues of Marxist-Leninist dialectics, he’d do that.
and he’ll throw all these people who are helping him to regain power right the fuck under the bus in a heartbeat — as he always does. but by then, it will be too late for America.
It doesn’t matter to Donald Trump what happens or how it goes down. The only thing he cares about is the result, and that the results on Election Night show him as the unquestioned winner.
Once that happens, the wheels can begin turning, and TrumpWorld can start plotting the demise of a quarter-millennium of American democracy. Americans will have about 10-11 weeks to wrap their head around what they’ve done and to realize that their generation is responsible for the death rattle of the world’s most reliable democracy.
Alabama's legislature may overturn last week’s legal atrocity, but this won’t be the only brush fire that pops up across the American political landscape. We should consider the Alabama Supreme Court’s decision a warning shot, an indication that the Christofascists are coming for our rights…and they won’t stop until they get what they’re after- the ability to control every aspect of American life.
What can we anticipate on November 6? Will it be our last free and fair election?
Will January 20, 2025, represent a transformational moment in our history when we’ll begin to see the dismantling of the America we once knew? Or will we be able to breathe a collective sigh of relief because someone besides Donald J. Diaperload has taken the Oath of Office and the Worst President EVER is wearing an orange jumpsuit in a federal lockup?
I don’t know about you, but I could do without the drama. It would be one thing if it were just the election, but the possibly losing our democracy part of the equation is just WAY too much for me.
