Tomorrow’s the day…when I set off on the path to finding out if I can make a go of this “getting paid for putting my thoughts out into the universe” thing. To say that I’m unclear on the concept would be an understatement, but how many great ideas were launched by those who had no freakin’ clue?
No, really; how many? I’d like to know, because I have no freakin’ clue.
I’m not going to pretend to know what the final product will look like, and I fully anticipate that I’ll be building this airplane as I fly it. So, at this point, design is an afterthought, though I’d like to do something a wee bit- oh, I don’t know- sexier? All in good time, to be sure. First, one must learn to slither, then crawl, and then…well, you get the idea.
After all, the swamp wasn’t drained in a day.
My plan is to do at least 2-3 free posts per week and at least 5-6 posts per week behind a paywall. That might change with the passage of time. Much will depend on how successful this launch is. I’m not worried about the writing. That’s the easy part and the one thing that won’t change.
I’m grateful to those of you who’ve read my work on a regular basis for the almost two years I’ve been writing on Substack…and the 19+ years before that going back to when I hand-coded my original blog in HTML. Ah, yes, the good ol’ days….
I’m not going to apologize for believing good writing is worth something, because it is. To those of you who’ve already agreed and have purchased a subscription, thank you. I appreciate the endorsement and your commitment to supporting my passion.
Good writing, as with any creative endeavor, requires time, effort, and engagement- all of which I do willingly. Writing is my passion, one I happily chase and will continue to pursue. People who are willing to compensate me for that represent the ultimate reinforcement, and that means more than I can express.
No, I’m not going to use the funds to buy a fifth-tier soccer team in the UK (I think that’s already been done), nor do I anticipate growing fat and complacent off this endeavor…but every little bit helps, no?
As with everything else, the rules of the game are subject to change. Stay tuned….
I'm reasonably confident that far more mediocre ideas were born of certainty than great ones. One has to be confident enough to write it in the first place, and then determined enough to defend it once it is out there. But the quivering doubt is the egg from which the idea hatches. (There's a yolk in there somewhere.)
Someday I'll tell you the story of how Randy and I came to name our book.
