A couple of months ago, I saw a news report in which a doctor said that probably 94-95% of Americans would contract COVID-19 by the time all is said and done.
Great, I thought; I haven’t had COVID yet, so I still have an excellent chance to be one of the 5-6%. After all, I’ve been careful. I’ve avoided crowds, and I’m double-vaccinated and double-boosted. Sure, I’ve felt pretty bulletproof.
Then comes 5am Wednesday, and I hear a hoarse voice that sounds vaguely like Erin commanding me to wake up. “WTF?” I immediately thought, “It’s still oh-dark-thirty. There’d better be a good reason for this.”
Then I heard the words I thought I’d never hear in our house: “I have COVID.” She’d awakened around 430am with a sore throat, chills, and a heavy chest, so she took a COVID test. And, sure enough, it was positive.
Because I was feeling OK, we decided it was best to isolate myself in my basement man cave and sleep in one of our guest rooms, which I’ve done for the past two nights. But, then, I woke up this morning with the same symptoms Erin experienced on Wednesay- sore throat, chills, a heavy chest, and delusions of grandeur.
I took a COVID test, and within 10 minutes, we knew it was positive. @#$%!!!
Suddenly, I wasn’t feeling so bulletproof.
Fortunately, because I’m up to date on my vaccines and boosters, the symptoms are relatively mild and seem unlikely to get much worse. That said, it looks like I’m spending the weekend in my man cave watching soccer (Damn the bad luck, eh?).
I’m grateful we made it two-and-a-half years into the pandemic rather than getting sick early on. Things could have easily been much worse for us. We’ll feel like crap for a few days and miss some work. Fortunately, my Macbook doesn’t care what I may be infected with; it’s always here for me. At least I have that going for me.
And now, if you’ll excuse me, a couch and a soccer game are calling my name. Sadly, it’s about all I have any energy for.
Get well soon!
Really sorry to hear that. Still keeping my fingers and toes crossed for myself, though I suppose I ought to get a test in the house just in case.
