Stupid is as stupid does
Forrest Gump
Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX) has never made any secret about his being a proud Trump sycophant. As far as Jackson’s concerned, The Donald is capable of walking on water, has never told a lie, can make water from wine, and is capable of raising the dead. That he’s never done these things shouldn’t be taken as evidence of his inability to do so.
He’s also a real, honest-to-God, bona fide medical-type doctor, though I’m not certain I’d trust him to diagnose anything more serious than a paper cut. Before becoming a Congressman, he was Donald Trump’s personal physician (Oh, the stories he could tell…if only he were honest, right??). Of course, his experience as Trump’s physician showed him that 45 was a veritable Nietzschean Übermensch. Trump worked like a fiend, was honest to a fault, had the constitution of a man half his age, and was flat-out brilliant- quite possibly the smartest man on the planet.
Meanwhile, the rest of us saw someone who understood far less than he gave himself credit for, took no responsibility for his mistakes, and demanded ALL of the credit for what few successes came TrumpWorld’s way. He lied at such a frenetic pace that he exhausted fact-checkers who attempted to keep pace (Wherefore art thou, Daniel Dale?). This from a man who thinks fast food is haute cuisine, eats his pizza with a knife and fork, and orders his steak so well done that it’s served to him resembling warm shoe leather.
Trump may have taken a five-word cognitive test during his term in office (“Person. Woman. Man. Camera. TV.”) to prove that he’s “cognitively there.” The test created more questions than it answered and provided a plethora of material for late-night comedians. However, Trump’s day-to-day performance and clear difficulty with major issues meant that his handlers were forced to keep things simple. Thus was created what might be called America’s first comic-book Presidency.
Jackson completely ignores Trump’s unmistakable memory lapses to focus on what he believes makes Biden incapable of performing the duties of his office.
Jackson, who served as Donald Trump's White House physician, on Thursday night called on Joe Biden to take a cognitive test to prove that he was capable of leading the country.
'We can't sit on this any longer,' Jackson told Fox News host Sean Hannity.
He said Biden's performance overseas this week with world leaders was 'embarrassing'.
'He's not physically or cognitively fit to be our president right now.'
Jackson said he had been saying this for years.
'I know what the rigors of this job are, physically and cognitively - it's demanding.
'He's not inspiring confidence.
'It's sending the wrong message to our adversaries.'
Jackson said that Biden's behavior on his trip to the UK, Belgium and Switzerland had been 'embarrassing'
Jackson added: 'We need to know that we can trust our president, and we need to know that he's in charge of what's going on and someone else isn't pulling the strings behind the scenes.
'Because that's what it looks like now.'
This seems a good time to remind my readers that Jackson’s not without his own issues, which makes him perhaps not the best candidate to question President Joe Biden’s capabilities.
I mention this not to impugn Jackson’s reputation but to highlight his hypocrisy and inappropriateness as someone who fancies himself a qualified critic of the President.
Jackson himself was subject to an Inspector General's report in March that found he engaged in 'inappropriate conduct' involving alcohol use, 'disparaged' and 'belittled' subordinates.
He was Trump's unsuccessful nominee in 2018 to become the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
Jackson said he’d sent a letter to President Biden, asking him to take a cognitive test. It would not be unreasonable to suspect that the test Jackson wishes the President to take is far more rigorous than the one Trump subjected himself to. If there’s one thing Jackson and his fellow Republicans haven’t proven themselves immune to, it’s hypocrisy.
There’s little doubt but that this is an issue manufactured by Republicans looking for something- ANYTHING- they can use to embarrass Biden. Thus far, nothing they’ve tried has gained any traction, so it’s become a game of “throw-something-against-the-wall-and-see-if-it-sticks.”
Jackson cites Biden’s “mental decline and forgetfulness,” as well as several of his “gaffes” in arguing that he’s “not physically or cognitively fit to be our President right now.”
We should keep in mind that Jackson was the personal physician for the most obese President in our nation’s history, someone whose idea of exercise is riding in a cart while playing golf. Donald Trump was “not physically or cognitively fit to be our President” in any sense.
To conclude that this is a purely political attack would be to belabor the obvious. Jackson aired his “concerns” over Biden’s cognitive abilities on “Hannity,” which host Sean Hannity was only too happy to amplify. Jackson referred to Biden’s performance as “embarrassing,” a sentiment echoed by virtually the entire Fox News ecosystem. This attack on Biden appears to be a coordinated strategy with one goal- destroying him and his presidency.
We should be asking what the Right-wing yardstick for defining “embarrassing” is given Donald Trump’s performance during his 2018 summit with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. Trump, whose body language at the joint press conference resembled that of a boxer who’d been KO’d in the first round and then forced to put on a brave face for the press despite not knowing where he is.
Joe Biden is 79, the oldest person to have assumed the Presidency in American history. To say that his advanced age shouldn’t be a concern is as naive as it is short-sighted. Let’s not forget that Donald Trump turned 75 a few days ago, which means he should have been subjected to the same scrutiny while in office.
Interestingly, Jackson is questioning Biden’s cognitive ability and referring to his performance as “embarrassing” even as he gives Trump a free pass. Jackson’s hypocrisy is as stunning as it is highly inappropriate. He ignored Trump’s obvious issues during his time as White House physician…but NOW the cognitive ability of a President is a matter of serious concern?
Or is it merely that Biden’s a Democrat and the GOP is pulling out every stop imaginable to destroy him?
At times like this, my memory takes me back to the late Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign slogan: “COUNTRY FIRST.” It’s a pity that today’s GOP has strayed so far from that standard. Today the party’s goal is simple: “POWER FIRST.” If they have to burn America down to the studs to achieve it, then so be it.
The era of Pax Americana is greatly imperiled by power-hungry non-entities and never-weres like Rep. Ronny Jackson. When power for the sake of power is the ultimate goal, and when service to country seems a quaint but naive notion, the decline of American power and influence may well be upon us.
As a wise friend of mine once said, the road to Hell is paved with Republicans.
