When most Americans think of racism, they think of the Deep South. However, the reality is that virulent racism, homophobia, and religious repression can be found in any of our 50 states. Yes, even in the great state of Michigan, where White Conservative Christian heterosexual patriots can rule with an iron fist every bit as repressive and overbearing as George Wallace or Bull Connor.

Take what’s happening in Warren, MI, por ejemplo, where since 2009, the local Bangladeshi community has had its own cultural festival. Until this year, that is. Why? Something about it being too “ethnic.”
