Madison Cawthorn: A Constitutional Scholar In The Same Way I'm Tom Brady's Love Child
Asheville, what were you thinking??
Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) has stepped in it again, insisting Americans have a “constitutional” right to completely “free and unrestricted” travel anywhere in the U.S. without being vaccinated….
Cawthorn didn’t cite which constitutional clause he thinks grants freedom to people who won’t get vaccinated against the coronavirus pandemic in his Newsmax interview. He failed to mention airline requirements like providing identification, wearing a seat belt and not smoking. The airline industry is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration, which sets safety regulations.
He also missed a landmark 1905 Supreme Court decision, Jacobson v. Massachusetts, that said vaccines can be mandated by local governments in a case that involved smallpox.
No one will ever accuse Madison Cawthorn of being a constitutional scholar or even a great intellect. Quite the opposite, in fact. Cawthorn has a gift for misrepresentation and prevarication that makes virtually anything he says difficult to accept at face value.
(Q: How do you know Cawtorn is lying?
A: His lips are moving.)
Perhaps he’s trying to compensate for being the youngest member of Congress by making patently ridiculous assertions (there’s no constitutional right to “free and unrestricted” travel). Or perhaps he’s trying to convince the Washington press corps that (mirror, mirror on the wall) he’s the Trumpiest of them all.
Whatever the case, Cawthorn has revealed himself to be utterly devoid of integrity, honesty, and credibility. Almost literally NOTHING he says can be assumed to be truthful because of his unfortunate predilection for lying and exaggeration. His pitiful attempts to make himself look like a serious politician invariably fall flat and can be excruciatingly embarrassing to watch.
One might think that being confined to a wheelchair might help to make Cawthorn a sympathetic character. Sadly, he’s squandered even that potential advantage, instead becoming a male version of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA)- unhinged, dishonest, hateful, and distressingly Trumpy.
One would expect a Congressman to have a comfortable working knowledge of the Constitution and the federal government. Cawthorn clearly knows little about either. He does know how to make a fool of himself, though…because he does it with surprising regularity.
Some Twitter wags noted that Cawthorn he must have been talking about those Revolutionary War airports that Donald Trump once referred to, and that’s why “unrestricted” air travel was written into the Constitution ― somewhere.
It wasn’t a stellar day for Cawthorn. He was also featured Thursday in a new political video by the Really American PAC highlighting his violent threat last month that there will be “bloodshed” as he lied yet again that the presidential election was “rigged.”
It’s easy for him to talk about “bloodshed.” He knows that sitting in a wheelchair means that he’ll never be involved in any violence except as an instigator. As for the last election being “rigged,” he’s never presented any evidence. He’s merely doing what so many other Republicans are doing- sucking up to Donald Trump.
The saddest thing about today’s GOP is that it’s become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Donald Trump. The Republican Party is Donald Trump, and Trump is the GOP. This means that Republicans are competing for Trump’s favor and attention because to anger or displease him is to risk seeing The Orange One endorse a primary rival during the next election cycle.
Madison Cawthorn knows this, so he’s pulling out all of the stops to be the Trumpiest of all Trump Republicans (which is redundant at this juncture). And so he’s been back in his district threatening civil war because of the “rigged election.” He’s also been raising fears that Joe Biden’s jack-booted thugs will be knocking down doors and forcibly vaccinating those who wish to protect their personal freedom.
That none of this is remotely true matters not at all to Cawthorn. All he has to do is to convince 50% + one person in his district, and he’s assured himself of re-election. He’s determined that the best way to ensure his job security is to align himself with the crazy Trumper caucus- people like Lauren Boebert, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz, and Jim Jordan- and keep peddling the “Big Lie.”
The problem is that Cawthorn is in no way representative of the solution. He’s a big part of the problem in that his brand is built on lies, propaganda, and dezinformatziya. He’s not about doing what’s right for his constituents or his country. It doesn’t even seem as if he really gives a damn about democracy. What he cares about are his political prospects. If he has to hitch his star to a failed ex-President and known liar and loser, then so be it. And that’s the path he’s chosen.
It’s just too bad that the good people of Asheville, NC, had such low standards when it came to selecting a Congressman. Madison Cawthorn is so transparently dishonest and lacking in integrity that an eight-year-old could see through his act. That the people of Asheville actually elected him to Congress tells me they either weren’t paying attention or that they don’t care. They know him better than anyone else…and they still elected him.
If Madison Cawthorn is qualified to be a Congressman in ANY shape, manner, OR form, then I’m the Queen of England. And I look terrible in a tiara and ball gown….
