Teaching children to hate America is indoctrination. Teaching children to love America is also indoctrination. Teaching children the truth about America, both its despicable bad and its inspiring good, is NOT indoctrination.

Growing up during the Vietnam War as I did, I was dosed with a healthy haze of “America- Love It or Leave It!” I was raised in a town of less than 1000 people in northern Minnesota that was about as White as White can be. Everyone’s skin color was just like mine, except for the Native Americans who hung around long enough to be despised by most townspeople.

I may not have been explicitly taught this, but the message was clear- America was the property and playground of White folks. We conquered America, built its cities, and made it the undeniably great place it is. We’re #1- F**K YEAH!!!
