I continue to remain profoundly indifferent to drag queens, more out of preference than anything else. Drag has never particularly interested me. I’ve never enjoyed watching drag performances, though I’ve nothing against it. Camp always leaves me cold, as do men wearing make-up applied with a trowel.

But that’s just me; it’s just not my thing.

What I don’t agree with are efforts to shut down drag performances because they might somehow “harm children.” If parents are willing to bring their children to things like Drag Queen Story Hour, then who am I (or you, or anyone else) to get my panties in a wad over it?

And to those who claim that drag queens are sexual perverts and pedophiles, this might be a good time to pull your anterior from your posterior and check out what’s happening here in the real world. That’s where the real threat to children isn’t represented by drag queens…it’s White Conservative Christian heterosexual males. And you don’t have to look far or long to confirm that fact.

"Mollycoddle" is a good word that should feature more prominently in all our lexicons. And drag performer Trixie Mattel, who won season three of "RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars," perfectly deployed the word in an interview with "Good Morning America" from the GLAAD Media Awards that's currently all over Twitter.

"This whole country mollycoddles Christians, and I'm fuckin' tired of it," is what she said.

She was talking about how right-wing fundamentalist Christian assholes are using drag queens for their demonization du jour, and said you can't even fight back with data because "this isn't a group of people who care about data." But most importantly, she said she was in the tub at her hotel and decided to do that thing we often do at Wonkette, where we JUST CHECK to see if the internet is harboring stories of a secret epidemic of drag queens abusing or grooming children that we don't know about. But each and every time, what do we find? That fundamentalist Christians are the people grooming and abusing children!

"There's no drag queens being arrested for the sexual assault of children, that doesn't happen. Do you know where that happens? The church. OK? That's where….

Are drag queens trying to take anyone's rights away? Lord no. "I just want to live. I just want to get drunk, is that too much?" she asked.

For whatever reason(s), there are large numbers of White Conservative Christian heterosexual males convinced (wrongly) that drag queens posed a specific and real threat to the innocence of children. (As if Nazis standing outside libraries flashing the Hitler salute doesn’t?)

They refuse to face the truth that the perverts and pedophiles come from among their own, not from among drag queens. They can’t admit that their revulsion toward drag performance is built on the soft sand of their own prejudice and homophobia. Yeah, it’s much easier to demonize performers than to deal with the truth.

If those who protest (in some cases, violently) outside Drag Queen Story Hours were serious about protecting children, they’d be gathering outside their churches and beating up the leaders of those churches charged with child sex crimes. Trying to shut down Drag Queen Story hours only serves to highlight their own considerable ignorable and homophobia. Worse, it does nothing to further their stated goal of protecting children from sexual molestation. Indeed, it makes it even easier for children to be exploited.

Then again, it’s never been about the children, has it? The kids are simply a smokescreen for the fears and prejudice of those flashing Nazi salutes outside libraries hosting Drag Queen Story Hours.

In a way, we think the grooming (yes grooming) that fundamentalist Christians do is designed to preserve their status quo, which allows some of these "Father Knows Best" pastors, priests, and youth group leaders to preserve power over the children within their grasp while their congregations and society look the other way.

So in that spirit, it's time for us to look through the headlines for just the past week and find all the stories of trusted pastors, priests and youth group leaders sexually abusing kids. Let's see how many we find! As usual, many thanks to JoeMyGod for so meticulously aggregating these stories.

As usual we only went back seven days.

And, as usual, White Conservative Christian heterosexuals are engaging in an old and very effective Nazi propaganda technique promulgated by Josef Goebbels. All you have to do is indignantly accuse your adversaries of doing the very same thing you’re planning to do. Before long, they’ll be buried in outrage and trying to defend themselves; meanwhile, you can go about your own dirty business without a care in the world.

Despite the truth, Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott signed a bill last week banning drag performances. Well, that certainly oughta keep the perverts from praying on Texas’ children, eh?

Um, no. Even though Gov. Abbott signed a bill intended to protect children from sexual exploitation at drag performances, all the Governor did was to open up the playing field for the REAL perverts.

Nice work, eh? Yessiree, a lot of performative outrage certainly can go a long way…particularly if it’s followed up with a whole lot of performative dickishness- something Gov. Abbott excels at.

In case any of y’all are wondering why I have nothing but contempt for wacko fascist Republicans/White Conservative Christian heterosexuals…yeah, this is one big reason. They could solve a problem, but they’re choosing to ignore the obvious hole in the dike, plug the smaller hole, and pat themselves furiously on their backs as the water continues to pour in.

And you wonder why most Republicans are about as useless as a two-legged poker table….
