Today's coffee-spew moment- "Democrats for Ted Cruz"
"I like Ted Cruz more than most of my other colleagues like Ted Cruz, and I hate Ted Cruz" - former Sen. Al Franken (D-MN)
In the fine tradition of “Cows for McDonalds,” “Chickens for KFC,” “Cancer Survivors for Leukemia,” and “Women for Trump” comes the latest in “WTF? This has to be an AstroTurf political group, right??” Because it’s difficult to think of a situation that would lead a rational, thinking Democrat to vote for a spineless, self-absorbed, amoral weasel like Rafael Edward (“Ted”) Cruz.
It feels like this story could’ve been an April Fool’s Day story, but when I checked the byline, it was dated March 6. So, is this an actual thing? The Houston Chronicle was asking the same question:
Is there such a thing as a "Democrat for Cruz"?
Apparently so, according to Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who one day after claiming victory in the Republican primary announced the launch of Democrats for Cruz, a grassroots group tasked with enticing left-leaning voters who are unhappy with their party's leadership to cross party lines and vote red.
It marks a new path for Cruz who has notoriously refused to play nice with the Democratic party. The coalition’s initial rollout features a handful of former and current Democratic officials, including former Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz Jr., Presidio County Sheriff Danny Dominguez and former Obama appointee Marty McVey of Houston. Cruz said he hopes to expand the group as he campaigns over the next several months.
Sen. Cruz has been notorious for insulting and denigrating Liberals and Democrats over the years for all sorts of things, from the specious to the downright silly. And now he wants to entice them to come to the Dark Side?
What’s his sales pitch?
COME TO THE DARK SIDE…WE HAVE COOKIES…. :-)
Yeah, I’m not buying it, either.
What do they have on these people? Are they holding their families hostage? Is the campaign threatening to release embarrassing information about them- naked photos, sex videos, grainy videos of graphic intercourse with livestock? Do they have evidence of sexual improprieties with underage children? Or tailpipes on ‘69 Mustangs?
What else could possess a Democrat in full possession of their faculties to vote for Cancun Cruz?
Here’s what I fail to understand: Why would any sane Texas Democrat cross over to vote for a dead fish like Ted Cruz, especially when the alternative is a Democrat with a brain- Rep. Colin Allred?
Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX) won more than half the votes in yesterday’s Democratic Senate primary. That means he won’t face a runoff in May and can now kick off his general-election campaign against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who is somehow still in office despite still being Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).
Allred, a former NFL player, first went to Congress in 2018, after taking down a Republican incumbent. And not just any incumbent, it was longtime GOP powerhouse Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), who D4FRFP [Ed. note: Disgraced, quadicted, fraudster, rapist, former President] Donald Trump and the GOP went all in to save. But failed.
Allred is campaigning on his usual policy go-to: health care — like, actual Obamacare! — and reproductive rights. Like, the kind there aren’t in Texas.
Cruz’s website, as might be expected with anything associated with him, manages to play fast and loose with the truth:
TEXAS — Today, Team Cruz announced the launch of a new coalition, Democrats for Cruz. Comprised of Democrats across the Lone Star State, this new coalition will work to get out the vote for Senator Cruz in his fight for re-election because they understand that Senator Cruz is the leader that Texas needs to ensure that we keep Texas, Texas.
The National Democratic Party has abandoned Texans. They’ve abandoned our brave men and women in law enforcement, they’ve abandoned South Texans as they deal with a historic border crisis, they’ve abandoned the oil and gas industry for a radical climate agenda, they’ve abandoned small businesses by crushing them with skyrocketing inflation, they’ve abandoned parents for a woke ideology.
Comprised of local sheriffs, former and current elected officials, small business owners, ranchers, students, oil and gas workers, parents, and more, Democrats for Cruz will continue to grow as Senator Cruz embarks on the campaign trail across the state.
Of course, Team Cruz conveniently ignores that Democrats haven’t been in power in Texas since the days of LBJ, so to say that the National Democratic party “has abandoned Texans” is something of a stretch.
Republicans have run roughshod over Texas for most of the past 50 years or so, so what Texas is today is primarily the responsibility of Republicans. Ted Cruz knows that, but he and his team still have to find a way to twist the truth to blame Democrats.
In 2018, Sen. Cruz tried to motivate Republicans to get to the polls to vote for him by saying that Democrats would “crawl over broken glass” to vote against him. He wasn’t wrong; Texas Democrats (any Democrat, really) hate Ted Cruz just that much.
Democratic voters did turn out in large numbers, even without having to crawl over broken glass, and they came within a couple of percentage points of removing him from his Senate seat.
Now he’s trying to play nice with Democrats? Seriously? That seems a bit of a stretch. I have a feeling that most Texas Democrats haven’t forgotten 2018. What’s more, I don’t think Colin Allred will let them forget how much they hate Ted Cruz, who’s a slimy, self-absorbed, dishonest, duplicitous weasel under the best of circumstances.
By the time Cruz came up for reelection in 2018, he had sought to shut down the federal government in a failed gambit to defund the Affordable Care Act. He had run for the Republican presidential nomination and in the process called eventual 2016 nominee Donald Trump "a sniveling coward." And in a Senate floor speech Cruz had accused Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of telling "a flat-out lie" during legislating maneuvering.
Antipathy for Cruz during that time was so baked into the political cake that it wasn't just late-night comedians making jokes about it. Joining them were the Texas Republican's own peers in the notoriously genteel Senate chamber….
It was a bipartisan sentiment.
"If you killed Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial was in the Senate, nobody would convict you,” joked Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.
Graham later walked the one-liner back, acknowledging that death might be too harsh a penalty for the crime of rubbing fellow senators the wrong way.
Among other things, Sen. Cruz failed to stand up for his wife, Heidi, when Donald Trump called her “ugly.” What sort of man doesn’t stand up for his wife…and then actively supports and even manned a phone bank for Trump during the 2016 Presidential campaign?
Ted Cruz, of course, will endure any insult and engage in any egregious/offensive behavior(s) if he believes it will advance his political prospects. And because Donald Trump has Cruz’s balls in a desk drawer at Mar-a-Lago.
I may no longer live in Texas, but I know the sort of man he is- a slightly less objectionable and mean-spirited version of former Congressman Tom DeLay. Sen. Cruz can charitably be described as “all hat and no cattle,” meaning he’s all talk and no substance.
At least Rep. Colin Allred can speak to issues without insulting or attempting to demean his interlocutor. And he understands who he’s working for.
Sen. Ted Cruz only works for himself as he focuses on the next rung on the ladder- the White House.
Wottafukkinweasel….
