Tommy Tuberville- Any Racism Is Good Racism
Say, didn't he used to make millions off of Black kids scoring touchdowns??
I know; saying Tommy Tuberville is racist is like saying Herschel Walker likes to tell jokes about pregnant cows jumping barbed-wire fences. The junior Senator from Alabama is just playing a role, but it’s a revolting and thoroughly disgusting one. It’s also a role he’s uniquely suited for, even if he’s a hypocrite- which means he fits right into today’s GOP.
It seems that wherever Sen. Tuberville goes these days, as soon as he opens his mouth, out pops a Klan rally. Go figure.
Donald Trump held a rally Saturday in Minden, Nevada, on behalf of Republican gubernatorial nominee Joe Lombardo and Senate nominee Adam Laxalt. The primary was over months ago, and the general election is less than a month away. Conventional wisdom when you're running in a swing state is that you'll moderate your positions, so independent voters will think you're normal. You might also want to keep your distance from Mr. International Man of Espionage himself, who lost Nevada twice. Republicans don't do this anymore, though, and Saturday's event played out like a Klan rally.
The location was perversely ideal for the rhetoric. Minden was once a sundown town, where “colored people" weren't welcome after dark. Special guest racist Tommy Tuberville, the senator from Alabama who remains in office despite being an enabler of Trump's coup attempt, denounced Democrats as not just "soft on crime" but actively "pro-crime." Calling Democrats "soft on crime" was traditionally Republicans' coded way of accusing Democrats of failing to keep minorities in line, but you didn't need a decoder ring to interpret Tuberville's blatantly racist appeal.
“Sundown towns” are not pleasant places. My experience with a “sundown town” was nothing, if not creepy. I stopped in Vidor, TX, once, just west of the Louisiana border. Vidor, if memory serves, was once the KKK headquarters of east Texas. It was also a “sundown town,” and even in the early 21st century still has an air of malevolence about it. As an outsider, I felt my presence there was neither welcome nor appreciated- and I’m White as they come. I can’t even imagine what kind of reception a non-White person might’ve received.
Minden, though, was entirely to Tuberville’s liking, and he warmed to the atmosphere there like a stripper taking to a pole.
Tuberville ended his football coaching career at Auburn University, where he won championships and enough games to keep himself gainfully employed, not an easy thing to do in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
To maintain that success, Tuberville had to recruit and coach hundreds of black athletes- the very same blacks he derided at the rally in Minden as demanding reparations.
I wonder what those players think of him now. Would they have played for him if they’d known what a repulsive, unrepentant racist he is? Would they have accepted a football scholarship to Auburn if they’d known how much Coach Tuberville hated blacks?
Listening to Tommy Tuberville, I felt as if I’d traveled back to the 1960s, when this sort of virulent hatred and race-baiting was de riguer in the South, though I don’t know about Minden, NV. Tuberville probably has to play the race card for two reasons:
He’s been an absolute disaster as a US Senator. He knows nothing about how the Senate works and even less about the legislative process. His only “qualification” was being a football coach…and it’s shown during his time in the Senate. He’s accomplished little of value save for being a reliably Republican vote against progress of any sort.
The GOP has offered nothing as an alternative to Democratic policy initiatives. Sure, they’ll tell American how Democrats have “failed” and how terrible Joe Biden is, but what have they offered in response to what they see as policy “failures.” Don’t hold your breath waiting for their response; you’ll pass out before you get one.
Let’s not forget that much of the Democratic “failure” has been due to Republican obstructionism. If you’re going to blame Democrats for not getting things done, at least have the integrity to own your role in throwing sand in the gears, eh?
Republicans like Tommy Tuberville excel are screaming about how Democrats have cratered the economy- look how high “Joe Biden’s gas prices” are!! But the Biden Administration’s job creation numbers are good. Inflation, while not where anyone wants it to be, is showing signs of coming down. And last quarter’s GDP was in positive territory.
Oh, and by the way, the President’s actions have little impact on the price of gasoline. I can’t help but wonder if Republicans would’ve credited him if the price at the pump had dropped noticeably.
(When airborne pigs violate Saudi Arabian airspace, amiright??)
What that means is that America isn’t in a recession. So are we where we want to be? Of course not, but we’re a damned sight closer than we were during Donald Trump’s pandemic.
(Yes, if Republicans can blame Joe Biden for gas prices, Democrats can blame Trump for the pandemic. And they’d have a far better case.)
Republicans have been yelling for months about how bad things are, but if you ask them about their plan to make things better, all you get in response is gibberish.
HUNTER BIDEN’S LAPTOP!!!
INVESTIGATE THE JANUARY 6TH COMMITTEE!!!
HILLARY’S EMAILS!!! (Really? We’re perseverating over that dead horse??)
GAS PRICES!!!
INFLATION!!!
Why anyone would vote Republican this fall is something that defies rational understanding. Then again, it’s the same old Republican game- cast blame, never offer solutions, and continue to blame Democrats when they’re in power. If Republicans never accept responsibility for their actions (or lack thereof), they can always blame Democrats after the GOP has (once again) been booted out of power.
We’ve seen this movie before…and it never ends well. You’d think the American Sheeple would’ve figured this game out by now, but they always seem to get snookered, like it’s the first time they’ve heard the propaganda.
Fool me once; shame on you. Fool me for the sixth or seventh time…oh, fugeddaboudit….
All the American Sheeple need to do is figure out if the light in the distance is sunshine at the end of the tunnel or the headlamp of an oncoming train.
Good luck with that one, eh??
Here in So. IL, Vienna (VY-enna) is one of the more notorious Sundown Towns. Technically that is no longer the case, but these fascists aren't the sorts to cavil over technicalities.
