Tony Perkins Spends A Lot Of Time Obsessing Over Gays
It almost makes you wonder what he's afraid of, doesn't it??
We see in others what we fear in ourselves.
Stalwart man of God that he is, Tony Perkins certainly feels that he and his fellow Christians are mightily persecuted by the “ungodly.” His latest thing is offering tips to the godly on “surviving the rainbow onslaught” during Pride Month. Of course, EVERY good, decent, red-blooded, patriotic, missionary-position-loving Christian DESPISES Pride Month. This despite it having no impact whatsoever on their lives or morality…or anything else. Perkins believes that being a good and faithful Christian requires hating the LGBTQ community with a fiery, unquenchable passion. He certainly seems to be leading the way.
Perkins, the head of the uber-conservative Family Research Council, is to the love and compassion of Jesus Christ what Meal Team Six is to the US Navy. For someone who professes to believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ- who among other things taught love, tolerance, and acceptance- Perkins seems to hate an awful lot of people.
He’s very clearly NOT gay- that’s what he tells us- so the reason Pride Month upsets him defies explanation. Despite this, he’s willing to make plenty of noise to cover for whatever his motives may be.
“How did we get to the point where celebrating sex and transgenderism became a 30-day event that rivals Christmas?” he continued. “We have a president who’s flying the rainbow flag above the U.S. flag at our embassies, a Democratic Congress that thinks the military should salute pride on base, and a White House that brags [that] almost 1 percent of its 1,500 appointees are LGBT. You can’t blame people for wondering: When did we become identified by our sexual proclivities? The world is upside down when American pride is something we should apologize, for but sexual perversion is the stuff of parades. Just a few decades ago, these activists said all they wanted was recognition, autonomy, coexistence. Now, a handful of years after Obergefell, it’s not enough to leave them alone with their choices; they demand validation, affirmation, celebration. Pride is the new religion, and everyone must bow a knee to their sexual gods or face the left’s fiery furnace.”
“Is it just me or is it almost like a neon sign that this is called ‘Pride’ Month?” Perkins asked right-wing theologian Wayne Grudem later in the broadcast. “The very thing that when we read throughout Scripture is the downfall of man is pride. It’s almost as if—as I prayed a few moments ago—[we’re] shaking a collective fist in the face of God.”
I’d wager that the LGBTQ community has had precisely ZERO- none, zip, nada- impact on the quality of Perkins’ life…unless he spends his evenings cruising gay bars (in which case he’s a hypocrite of the first order). Gays, lesbians, and trangenders, et al., shouldn’t be a burden to Perkins’ day-to-day existence. He wakes up in his heterosexual house. He drives to his heterosexual job in his heterosexual car. He enjoys his heterosexual friends on his heterosexual weekends. He attends his heterosexual church. He reads heterosexual books and newspapers. He enjoys heterosexual pornography. Each night, he savors sumptuous heterosexual repasts prepared by his heterosexual wife.
Then, perhaps once every two or three months, he’ll have sex- in the missionary position, of course- with his heterosexual (but horribly bored) wife.
There is nothing about the “gay lifestyle” or “gay agenda” or whatever you choose to call it that has any deleterious effect at all on Tony Perkins. Could it be that his performative outrage is more about him and an uncertain, unresolved relationship with his own sexuality? Could it be that he’s terrified of what’s hiding behind Door #1? Perhaps he’s using his faith as a bulwark against feelings he doesn’t understand and is too frightened to sort out?
Could it be that his attempts to force the LGBTQ community back into the closet are efforts to deny his own unacknowledged sexual urges? Is Perkins hoping to keep those urges safely locked up by leading the rest of the Rabid Religious Right in vehemently opposing Pride Month?
It’s a legitimate question. Since there’s nothing about Pride Month and the LGBTQ community that negatively impacts Perkins, the Family Resource Council, or the rest of the Rabid Religious Right, why the vitriol? Why the determination to crush a community that wants to be free to be their most genuine and authentic selves? Neither Perkins nor anyone else needs to like or approve of how LGBTQ individuals conduct themselves…but they’ve no right to enforce their personal faith and moral code as the yardstick by which ALL must live.
I’m offended by what I perceive to be the ignorance, self-righteousness, homophobia, racism, and self-superiority of Perkins and the Rabid Religious Right. I’m free to my disgust at their attempt to force their faith on those who don’t share it. That said, I have no right to encode that loathing into state and federal statute codes.
Likewise, Perkins is free to spew his homophobia and hatred as he chooses…but free speech doesn’t mean speech without consequences. Those who believe in tolerance and acceptance are free to speak out against haters and bigots like Perkins. We’re also vindicated if we publicly wonder what his real motives might be.
I’m not saying that Tony Perkins is a deeply closeted gay man. Then again, I’m not saying that he isn’t. I can speculate, I can offer my opinion…but I can’t accuse Perkins of something I can’t prove and about which I frankly couldn’t care less. Who and/or what he may his bliss with is his concern and his alone.
Would that he could extend the same courtesy to the LGBTQ community.
Perkins can spend his weekends making sweet, sweet love to his neighbor’s goats for all I care. Whatever gets him through the night, right? This is a free country…and as long as no goats are harmed (I presume they’re consenting), where’s the fire?
Live and let live. Let your freak flag fly proudly. Embrace your truth. Be who you are. Love who you love; ain’t nothin’ to apologize for, right?? People have the right to be who they are. NO ONE has the right to tell them otherwise.
Tony Perkins can whine and moan about Pride Month from now until the Second Coming (Ed. note: Which I don’t believe in). All it will do is confirm my suspicion that he secretly wishes he could take part.
That’s the thing about rainbows. There’s a place for everyone…even haters and bigots trying to hide their true selves.
