What's absolutely terrifying is how selfish and callous people can be
We should all be sick of allowing the unvaccinated to set the agenda
I’m generally opposed to government intrusion in an individual’s personal life and choices as much as any reasonable person. That said, these aren’t reasonable times in which we’re living. If we expect government to save us from the COVID-19 pandemic, yet we refuse to cooperate with the solutions presented by said government, we can’t claim to be surprised when things take a turn for the unpleasant.
Almost 80 years ago, millions of Americans came together to defeat a common enemy. What came to be called “The Greatest Generation” didn’t whine and moan about “MUH RIGHTS!!!” It didn’t complain about intrusive government policies. And it certainly didn’t bitch about the sacrifices that millions of Americans were called upon to make. There was a common enemy- Japan and Germany- to be fought, and America’s- and the world’s- future was on the line.
Millions of American men volunteered to fight. American women became nurses and factory workers. Those who couldn’t do either made other sacrifices to support the war effort. In the end, every one of those sacrifices was needed for America to prevail. As a result, peace and order were restored to the world, and America ushered in an era of unprecedented prosperity and opportunity, unlike anything the world had ever seen.
People are being asked to get vaccinated to prevent the spread of COVID-19. And some folks can’t be bothered, and the reasons why leave me gobsmacked. No one’s asking them to storm Normandy’s beaches or face down machine-gun fire in the southeast Pacific. Nor is anyone being forced to campaign through Europe to defeat the scourge that was Nazism.
No, Americans (as are citizens of other countries) are being asked to get a series of three shots intended to protect them from serious illness, hospitalization, and death. Yet even that sacrifice is a bridge too far for those who believe they bear no responsibility to anyone but themselves. Instead of accepting that they have a responsibility to protect themselves and those around them, they believe the public owes THEM.
More than 99% of the deaths from COVID-19 have occurred among the unvaccinated. This has become a pandemic of the unvaccinated and the stupid (not my description). Too many people are willing to reject science because it doesn’t mesh with their political/religious/ideological beliefs. They’ve “done their research,” and they KNOW what they KNOW, which is more than those who’ve devoted years to vaccine research.
We have a free, easily accessible, and safe means to protect ourselves and those around us- and millions refuse, in some cases paying for their intransigence with their lives. ‘Cuz it’s about “owning the Libs,” don’tchaknow??
FREEDUMB!!
I can’t speak to the political/public health situation in Italy. But I do know that the country has suffered horribly from COVID-19. Compulsory COVID-19 vaccinations may be what the government believes is the best way to achieve the greatest good for the most significant number. I sincerely doubt it’s about “Big Brother” figuratively placing the jackboot of tyranny upon the necks of Italian citizens.
Why can’t people do the right thing for the right reason(s)? Why do so many have to be persuaded or coerced into meeting their responsibility to something larger than themselves? Why can’t people understand the concept of being their brother’s keeper?
If people met their responsibility voluntarily, compulsory COVID-19 vaccinations wouldn’t even be part of the conversation. That they have to be is a sad commentary on our selfishness and refusal to consider the well-being of others.
Such a sad state we’re in….
