When Jesus is too big for you
And He just doesn't have time for your hypocrisy
Happy Zombie Jesus Day to those who celebrate, and Happy Easter to those of you for whom this is a BFD. To those of you who celebrate Easter for all the right reasons, I hope this will be a joyous day.
For those who, like me, celebrate today as Zombie Jesus Day by watching a lot of soccer because today is NBD…well, rock on, Garth. May your Sunday be restful, and your club steadily climb the table. At least a few of my friends will be trying to nurse bitchin’ hangovers, so I’ll try to keep the noise down.
My subject today is hypocrisy. Yes, it’s a topic that’s difficult to do justice to in 1000-1500 words, but I’ll give it a go. If there’s one thing I’ve grown sick and tired of this election cycle, it’s that hypocrisy barely carries a stigma in today’s political discourse.
One might ask why that might be the case. I’m going out on a limb and positing that since Donald Trump descended the escalator at Trump Tower in Manhattan in 2015, shame has left the station—on a one-way ticket to the Great Beyond.
Trump didn’t invent lying and hypocrisy, but as you see in the four posts from his account on his Trump Social website, the shamelessness is…well, stunning, for lack of a better word.
Donald Trump is responsible for inciting the January 6, 2021, insurrection that resulted in five deaths. Among those five deaths, if memory serves, were at least two police officers who Trump didn’t give a shit about at the time.
But now, when it serves his political purpose, he’s a strong backer of the men and women in blue.
When I saw these posts, my first response was, “What a fucking hypocrite. How DARE he act as if he’s mourning a fallen officer in New York City when he didn’t show an ounce of caring or compassion for those who fell at the US Capitol on January 6.”
Now, though, he can show up, schmooze with the family of Officer Diller and other officers, pretend that he cares, and ultimately ask, “Where’s Joe Biden?” Trump’s visit has nothing to do with a fallen officer or comforting those he’s left behind. It’s merely another opportunity for Trump to score some political points and thus cheapen what should have been a solemn event.
Instead of allowing Officer Diller’s family, friends, and the NYPD to begin grieving him, Donald Trump swoops in, makes it all about him, and makes Diller’s death secondary to his appearance, which was conveniently photographed and videoed to the nth degree. Then he went on Truth Social and Fox News and reveled in his “Back the Blue” moment.
The entire spectacle had nothing to do with the life of Officer Jonathan Diller, who frankly deserved better in death than having his funeral and burial turned into a political sideshow featured on Fox News Channel. It was a sad, politicized charade that Diller’s family and the NYPD willingly participated in. Perhaps they hate Joe Biden so much that they were willing to politicize a fallen officer’s death. Whatever the case, it was a sad and pitiful denouement to a tragedy.
No matter what happens, what Joe Biden does, or how well he does it, the Far-Right, MAGA Nation, and Donald Trump will find a way to ridicule the President. Biden could cure cancer while walking on water and simultaneously solving world hunger…and these cretins would find a way to belittle the accomplishment. Nothing is ever enough, and no matter how this President succeeds, it always falls short of expectations for these intellectual and moral lugnuts.
Meanwhile, Trump could deliver his speeches in Gibberrish (which he frequently does), and his followers, including Republicans on Capitol Hill, would be singing Hosannas over his prescience and brilliant, inspired leadership. No one may have understood a word he says as drool dribbled off his chin and on to his signature red tie, but that will be lost in the uniform celebration of Dear Leader’s sagaciousness and wisdom.
“Truly, Dear Leader will guide AmeriKKKa to the Promised Land, and as prophesized by St. Ronald of Reagen, AmeriKKKa will become a Shining City on the Hill.”
Right, AmeriKKKa will become a place where good, God-fearing, White Conservative Christian Cisgenger Heterosexuals will enjoy the material blessings they have waited far too long for.
What continues to astonish me is that millions continue to pledge allegiance to a thrice-married, twice-divorced, four-times-indicted, six-times-bankrupt, serial sex abuser, pussy-grabbing, disrespectful, dishonest rapist who respects nothing and no one- including his devoted, knuckle-dragging followers.
Imagine a Democratic version of Donald Trump? Can you? No, because such a moral black hole would never be allowed on any state’s primary ballot…and rightfully so. Yet Trump has completely taken over the GOP and made the party his own private political play toy. Could a Democrat have done the same? WOULD a Democrat have been allowed to?
Hell, no, they wouldn’t. Nor should they be. And yet virtually the entire GOP dropped trou, bent over, and grabbed their ankles for Trump (try getting that image out of your mind, eh? You’re welcome.)
So, on this Easter Sunday, let’s remember that the least godly man in America is the overwhelming choice of Evangelical Christians. Not only that, he’s hawking Bibles for ONLY $59.99 on Trump Social. And, the man who hasn’t read anything more intellectually challenging than Mein Kampf or a Captain America comic book insists the Bible is one of his favorite books.
Hypocritical? In my world, he wouldn’t have the moral standing to managing a Dairy Queen, much less run for President. The fact that he has a shot at being sworn in as our 47th President on January 20, 2025, says much about AmeriKKKa. None of what it says is good.
