You Know You're Dumber Than A Post Turtle When....
You can't even be bothered to do your own research?
People lie. I get that. So my philosophy has always been, “If you’re going to lie to me, at least put some frickin’ effort into it. At the very least, don’t insult my intelligence.”
Man, the GOP couldn’t even manage that much.
The Republican Party posted a quote on Twitter Friday about freedom, of all things, that was falsely attributed to George Washington.
It was quickly shot down by a CNN reporter.
The GOP tweeted on Friday: “Let freedom be free.” It added a quote allegedly from Washington saying: “It will be found an unjust and unwise jealousy to deprive a man of his natural liberty upon the supposition he may abuse it.”
But CNN reporter Andrew Kaczynski fired back that Washington had nothing to do with the quote, according to the George Washington Mount Vernon Estate. It lists the phrase under “spurious quotations.”
My only question about this sorry episode is pretty simple: Did whoever is responsible for @GOP not consider that their tweet would immediately be fact-checked, probably by a reporter? And you’d think that this brainiac would also understand that said reporter would have access to all sorts of databases that would assist him with discerning the integrity of the “George Washington quote.”
Duh.
I mean, c’mon on, y’all; do Republicans not consider these things? Or are they just neanderthals who don’t understand the nature of social media?
Fortunately, someone with WAY too much time on their hands figured out that the quote in question was actually from Oliver Cromwell.
‘Cuz I’m constantly getting Cromwell and George Washington mixed up….
As might be imagined, the Twitterati had quite the field day with this f**k-up.
Critics on Twitter found it searingly ironic that the GOP screwed up a quote about freedom amid the party’s crackdowns on reproductive rights for women, human rights for the LGBTQ community, people of color and voting rights.
The GOP quote was still up late Saturday night, and still falsely attributed to Washington.
I suppose you could say the GOP is all about freedom, just as long as they’re the ones deciding what freedom means. And it sure as Hell isn’t going to include reproductive freedom, LGBTQ rights, and freedom for all manner of marginalized groups.
So, basically, we’re talking about freedom for White Conservative Christian heterosexual males?
Exactly.
Sure. Let’s talk about freedom. If there were one lesson I would’ve thought the GOP could take away from the midterms, it’s that Americans aren’t ready for Republicans to turn their country into Gilead. In fact, they kinda like their freedoms- you know, the ones enumerated by the Constitution?
This is especially true among the younger generations- and by “younger,” I’m referring to voters under 30. Once they got a glimpse of what the current Supreme Court is capable of (overturning Roe v. Wade), they realized that rights shouldn’t be seen as an iron-clad lock. In fact, stare decisis no longer means anything, not when at least four of the justices lied about respecting the precedent of Roe v. Wade during their Senate confirmation.
(What do you think would happen if you had lied during the interview for your current job? How long do you think it would take your employer to escort you to the parking lot?)
Freedom is now something that younger generations are no longer willing to take for granted, and Republicans have yet to grasp that fully. As long as millennials and Gen-Z remain engaged in the political process, it seems unlikely that the GOP will fully recover as a majority party. That assessment may prove wrong, of course, but based on current voting patterns, it’s difficult to see large numbers of young people suddenly voting Republican.
Especially when they’re too lazy to do their damned research, and fake George Washington quotes are the best they can do.
Really, y’all? It never occurred to you that you’d be instantly fact-checked virtually the moment you hit “RETURN?” Y’all must be dumber than a post turtle.
"(What do you think would happen if you had lied during the interview for your current job? How long do you think it would take your employer to escort you to the parking lot?)"
It would take until he actually looked and discovered the lie. And they seldom look. The amount of lying on resumes is genuinely staggering, yet people get away with it all the time.
The same is true of the GOP generally. They know that their base is too lazy to learn the facts, too stupid to understand the facts, (what I call "the triad sins") and too dishonest to accurately report the facts. So they lie with promiscuous abandon.
My particular peeve is how they try to co-opt the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King to their own agenda. They claim he voted Republican (a bald-faced lie; no one knows how he voted on any topic or election.) They hold up the fact that he was a Baptist minister, ignoring the fact that the So. Baptist council changed its rules so that no one like King could ever become a minister in their church again. They ignore the fact that he openly embraced socialism. Etc.
