Some few years back, I mulled on what I ended up calling "The Myth of The Binary." One of the things that occurred to me is that there are at least 3 dimensions at play: physical presentation, sexual orientation, and gender identity. None of these break out in either/or binaries. Years ago, a friend of mine who was relatively closely associated with the gay community in Chicago mentioned that back in the '60's & '70's many gay people dismissed the idea of being bi as nothing but a refusal to come out of the closet. So little Matty is only 50+ years behind the curve ...

Like most people of my generation, I grew up believing gender was an "either/or" proposition. But now that I've seen friends, coworkers, and the children of friends go in different directions, I'm struck by the reality that the myth of the binary is just that. How can "either/or" encompass the entirety of the human experience? It's overly simplistic in the extreme.
